In mid 2006 CASE staff moved the computer equipment hosting the Australian Virtual Women's Legal Centre (a project of the National Women's Justice Coalition) from Sydney to a new server room at Volunteering ACT configured specifically for CASE member projects.

The AVWLC, a customised email list system for women to discuss legal issues, was running on equipment donated by the NSW Law Society which required replacement. It was also operating on an advanced type of Unix operating system that made it difficult to find volunteer technical assistance. As part of the move to Canberra the AVWLC was transferred to new equipment using CentOS Linux as it's operating system.

We are proud to inform members that this project has had significant outcomes:

  1. A new home for the Australian Virtual Women's Legal Centre

  2. The AWLC was transferred from Sun hardware and the Solaris operating system to a Dell server and CentOS Linux operating system which will allow it to be managed by those trained in the administration of Linux systems

  3. Improved security due to updating and the addition of security monitoring software

  4. The estabilishment and configuration of a high quality server room to support member projects. This has already led to the addition of servers that meet the administrative needs of CASE, provide training for technical staff, house the equipment for our Community eList project (see Projects link) and allow opportunities for further member services.

And there it is, a wonderful combination of four community organisations, a sprinkle of technical knowledge thrown in with some quality computer hardware/software, stir it all up and watch the benefits for CASE members grow.
